Our skin is covered in tiny pores which serve a double purpose:
Firstly they are hair follicle openings. Hairs root below the pore and grow through the opening.
Secondly they act as a way out for sweat and toxins which need to be expelled from the body.
So, you can tell, they’re quite important and need to be well maintained.
What Are Pores
Think about it … every single hair on our body will grow from a single pore and when you consider that the average adult will have about 5 million hairs that’s one hell of a lot of pores!
Most pores are minute – you won’t see them or know that they’re there but some will be bigger and more visible and it’s these large pores that can contribute to skin troubles. The reason for this is that dirt, debris, dead skin and oil will congregate in or around these pores which will not only make them appear even larger but will block them and provide a breeding ground for bacteria which can cause infection.
Contrary to popular opinion, blackheads do not cause enlarged pores but are as a direct result of them and all that squeezing, touching and rubbing tends to add to the problem
As we age and the skin loses collagen and elastin and the skins natural renewal cycle slows down which also adds to the visibility of our pores. The same is said for sun damage which also thickens the skin thus contributing to their appearance. Those of us with naturally oily skin will also struggle as oils will automatically settle around the pores.
Believe it or not turning to makeup to hide large pores may make the situation worse. Use the wrong type or fail to wash off completely and it can settle in the pores and hence enlarging them and highlighting them further.
There’s not much you can do about them as it’s mainly the luck of the genetic draw that decides which of us will have large pores. The bad news also (and contrary to the claims of many skin care products) … there’s nothing you can do to permanently shrink the size of your pores. The good news is that it is certainly possible to minimize their appearance.
How Reduce The Appearance Of Large Pores
Don’t forget, regardless of any claims, you can’t reduce the size of your pores – you’re born that way and there’s nothing you can do to make any form of permanent improvement.
What you can do is keep your pores clean and healthy and minimize the appearance of large pores.
The golden rule is to keep the skin clean at all times. Make sure that you thoroughly remove all traces of makeup each and every night. Clean and cleanse the skin properly and regularly but don’t cleanse too often or use overly abrasive products or it will aggravate matters. Regular exfoliating and skin brushing is also recommended using a product that suits your skin type. Doing this really cleans to the heart of the pores but again, don’t overdo it and always follow the manufacturers guidelines.
Moisturizing is also absolutely vital – not only does it help keep skin healthy it will also create a barrier to keep dirt and oils out of the larger pores.
Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water – it really does help the skin stay healthy.
Also, and never forget this, sunscreen is vital at all times.
Masks, peels, certain cleansers and toners will all have the effect of tightening the skin and this will really help. Quite simply, when your skin shrinks and tightens the pores will obviously shrink in size too. There are many products on the market that will do this – it’s just a matter of finding the best one for you. We suggest that you look for one of the specialise pore minimiser masks, peels, tonics or cleansers and match up with your skin type.
