Varicose Veins is not in itself a skin condition however the visible appearance manifests itself through the skin which is why we’ve included the condition on the pages of this site.
Whilst arteries pump the blood away from the heart and round the body the veins have to work even harder to pump the blood back to the heart to keep it flowing efficiently around the body.
Consider this … we’re standing up for most of the day and gravity is naturally pulling everything downwards but the heart is in the upper part of our body. Just imagine how hard those veins in our legs have to work to get the blood up there!
Human anatomy is amazing when you really stop and think about it – but things go wrong or wear out from time to time!
The veins work by pumping the blood through a network of one way valves. These valves open up to let the blood pass towards the heart but close to prevent the blood from being dragged back downwards towards our feet!
It’s when these valves stop working properly that they can become “varicose”. If they don’t pump the blood properly or they weaken and the non-return valve allows blood to pass both ways we end up with small pools of blood in the malfunctioning parts of our veins.
This pooling effect results in an increase of pressure in the veins which, in turn, causes them to swell, twist and bulge and that’s what we see on the skin – swollen, lumpy, twisted veins which often appear a dark blue color (due to the pools of blood) just below the surface of the skin.
As we said, the leg veins have to work the hardest and that’s why varicose veins are most often associated with the feet and legs.
The condition can also be accompanied with a feeling of heaviness, burning, itching or a dull ache, especially after long hours on our feet.
Varicose Veins can affect both men and women and often develops as we age. Like everything, the valves in the veins work very hard and will naturally weaken as we age which increases the risk of developing varicose veins. Equally though, they can be caused by injury, damage or, in fact, anything that induces increased pressure in the veins – such as obesity, pregnancy, standing up for excessive periods of time and an over sedentary lifestyle.
There is another closely related condition known as Telangiectasias or spider veins which are often confused with varicose veins. This condition however gets its name the resulting blue and red cluster of tiny blood vessels which is spread across an area of skin which appears somewhat similar to a spider’s web. Whilst they can appear anywhere they are most commonly seen at the back of the knee, the legs or the face.
The cause is similar to varicose veins ie malfunctioning valves in the blood vessels preventing efficient one way blood flow but obviously, as it affects areas of multiple tiny blood vessels rather than specific single veins.
Whilst both conditions are not dangerous it goes without saying that you should seek out professional medical advice as there are a variety of treatment options (cosmetic and medical) available depending on severity and symptoms.
